What I learnt: marathon episode

I’m going start by bragging. This year I trained for and ran a marathon. That’s right 42.2 kilometres.

I’ve run a couple of half marathons before, but I started about 9 months ago, from a comfortable 14km. I built up… 2km a fortnight, until I hit 36km. And then, on the day, I found another 6.2km and ran into the MCG, teared up when I saw my family and crossed that goddamn finish line.

And while I didn’t always jump out the front door at 5am, I mostly just did it. I’d put my gear out the night before, get up, put my gear on and run, turn around and run home.

So, what have I learnt? Pretty much that I can do anything if I so decide. Because 5 years ago, I didn’t run. I couldn’t run. And I didn’t like any incidental running that I had to do (kid wrangling, train catching, etc). Yet, there I was running a marathon.

Plus, there’s about 4 hours per week I was using to run stupid distances that I could now put towards something useful.

Like writing! I just have to convince myself that it’s a muscle that needs to be flexed. Like running made me better at running, I hope that writing will make me better at writing.

So, here is the plan: make writing goal. Write, write and write. Meet said writing goal.

The end!
