Scavengerpillar and Foragerfly – Lockdown Scavenger Hunt

When I was little, I used to take an ‘instreting’ bag with me everywhere. Why? In case I found something instreting (which is 5 year old for interesting, not a bookcase from IKEA). This scavenger hunt may require the services of an instreting bag.

Did you know that Eric Carle used collage techniques to illustrate The very hungry caterpillar? He used his own painting as collage, but in this scavenger hunt, we’re going to collage with things we find on our daily walk. Or if you’re in dreaded home quarantine, see what you can find in the garden or in your recycle bin!

How does it work?

  1. Sign up and I’ll send you a PDF file with the scavenger hunt items and templates.
  2. Print all 3 pages. You can leave pages 2 and 3 at home, but you’ll need to take page 1 on your walk.
  3. Step outside for some fresh air, with page 1 and your instreting bag. Collect the items you need as you walk.
Remember, you can use scissors or rip things to the shape you want. I cut circles out of shiny oval leaves to make my scavengerpillar’s body.
  4. When you get home, stick your collage pieces down or just layer them up and take a photo.
P.S. I’d love to see them. Post them on one of my facebook posts, or use #scavengerpillar or #foragerfly on Instagram or Twitter.
  5. And don’t forget to flip through your bookshelf and read The very hungry caterpillar one more time. What a great book!

If you don’t have a copy of this classic, call your local independent bookstore. You know every bookshelf needs a copy of this book.
