This week’s Captain Obvious epiphany comes courtesy of junior hockey.
When things get tough in junior hockey, there’s one thing that coaches and parents all yell – STICKS DOWN!!!!
You see, there is no chance of saving a goal, hitting your own goal, or anything, unless your stick is where the ball is. It’s a simple thing, but when they’re running, watching their opponent, trying to remember how corners work (honestly, who does understand corners), kids forget the basics. Put your stick down!
As I wandered around the house last week lamenting this week’s theme for Tania McCartney’s 52 week picture book challenge, it occurred to me that no writing gets done without a pen and paper. PENS DOWN if you like.
I’ve tried to brainstorm in my head. I’ve tried to brainstorm when I run. I’ve tried to brainstorm doing the dishes. One thing this 52 week challenge has taught me is to pick up a pen. Pens down.
When I’m brainstorming ideas, I write anything that pops into my head.
Anything. And everything.
I write down the questions. This week, I wrote But why would a fisherman catch a fish, put it in a bucket and then an hour later, throw it back in the water?
And then right under that, I wrote He just wouldn’t.
Problem solved. Don’t write about that. Find a better idea. If that question was in my head, I’d still be wasting time on it.
I love the honesty of pen to paper.
So, this week, my big learning is. No staring at the ceiling saying I have no ideas. No procrastinating while I think of an idea.
Pens down.
If only I had a hockey coach to remind me when I need it.
