Bird Spot – Lockdown Scavenger Hunt inspired by Mopoke by Philip Bunting

I first fell in love with Mopoke by Philip Bunting, when I spotted it in Story Box Library, being read by Tim Rogers. I laughed, and laughed and then I laughed some more. It’s such a simple idea, but so clever and so funny. I laugh every time I think about it. If ever I get a book published, I plan to plead with Tim to read it. He’s a genius and so’s Philip Bunting. Genius everywhere!

Now, you can watch a sneak peek of Tim reading this book here. But be warned, you’re going to want to see the whole thing. If you’ve never visited Story Box Library, get on it! My local library has a membership that I use, and yours might too.

While Tim got me to check out Mopoke, the book itself keeps me coming back. I’m a bit of a bird nerd, so this helps. Plus owls. Who doesn’t love an owl?

So, this week, for our scavenger hunt, we’re going bird spotting. Taking a leaf, or a feather, or a page, out of Mopoke’s book, you’ve got some fun birds to look for. None of this, let’s spot a magpie stuff! We’re looking for a sing-song bird, and a ping-pong bird. What about a beak bird and a hide-and-seek bird?

You can be as creative as you like trying to spot these birds. But one thing I promise you… you’ll be surprised at how many different types of birds you can find when you go looking.

How does it work?

  1. Sign up and I’ll send you a PDF file with the scavenger hunt items.
  2. Print it or look at it on your phone.
  3. Step outside for some fresh air and tick off the birds as you spot them.
  4. When you get home, pull Mopoke off the shelf and read. What a great book! If you don’t have a copy, you really must fix this ASAP. See below.

Don’t have Mopoke? Go get it – it will become a favourite for sure!
